SD4U's Newest Contest-Let's Get Real

Are you ready to get real? Let's look into the "real" life of some people on tv. Our first show is

AMERICAN IDOL!!!

This is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. I love watching this show. Anyone have a favorite this year? How do you feel about Adam Lambert? or that 16 year old girl? or or or . . .

Back to the challenge. Does anyone know what last week's theme was on the show? They had to sing a song from the year of their birth. I want to take that theme and run with it this week!

Here is your challenge:

1. scrap a layout about just one person, can be 1 or multiple photos as long as the one person is the only one in the photos

2. Use a song from the person's birth year as the title of your layout (google this, you can use any part of the song, but be sure to tell us what song it is)

3. Pick a layout from the gallery that you idolize, and lift it! We have so many wonderfully talented ladies on this board and the gallery is brimming with inspiration. Find something there that inspires you and lift that layout!

That's it. Anything else goes! hehe Size is up to you.

Post your layout in the gallery. Then link it here with your lift and the song info to be eligible for this week. All entries must be here by Sunday night at 11:59 PST on April 19th.

For your inspiration, here is what I created.

My song is She Will Be Loved by Maroon 5 from 2004.

My lift was this layout:

Let's see what you can come up with!

Hi Everyone! Welcome to my class. I was supposed to post this on Friday but it was our 11th anniversary and I forgot. So today I want to share with you how I create layouts.

I'd say that 95% of the time I start with a my supplies, the picture(s), and a sketch. Its very rare that I do any layout without a sketch. I just takes me too long to come up with a play without using something to help me get started.

Here is the sketch I used for this layout and a picture of my supplies. I used the Marrakech kit.

This is a sketch from a blog I like to read called creativescrappers.blogspot.com I get my sketches from lots of different places. PageMaps are a definite favorite, but there are others I like to use like this blog.

Image

Next I cut my papers down to the size I needed to mimic the sizes in the sketch. I used my EK Success corner rounder to scallop a strip of paper. Just take off the plastic foot and line up the scallops from the back of the punch.

Image

Then I ran my file along the edges of each piece of paper to add some dimension. It just takes off the top layer of color and reveals a white edge.

Image
This can make a mess of paper dust, but I really like the added touch this gives without a lot of work. This file tip was actually something Nicole taught me not too long ago. I love this tip too! I like it better than inking if I'm going for a white edge.

Then I glued the papers down according to the sketch.

Image

Added the photo, some embellishments and a little journalling.

Image

Then I tried to add the title. I was trying to use a bling word. I just have a really hard time getting those lined up though. I put it down, pulled it up, and put it down again. Finally I pulled it off, threw it un the trash and got out my Thickers. I didn't have enough letters from any one pack to make my title so I used a few letters from a couple different packs.

Here is the finished layout with the title and inked edges.

I hope you like the end result. Let me know if you try the scallops or filing your edges too.

SD4U New Contest!

We all know that things are pretty bleak right now. The economy is terrible and things aren't looking too great for a lot of people we know and maybe even ourselves. There is a group of people that things look pretty good for though. They live in TVland!. Starting on Monday, April 13th, each design team member will post a new layout challenge based around some of our favorite tv shows. You will have a week to complete the challenge. At the end of 5 weeks, we will post the weekly winners from each of those challenges. Those 5 winners will go on to compete in our finale week 6. There will be a fantastic prize for our finale winner!

So come on over and play with us at http://www.scrapbookdeals4u.com/forum

I love the SD4U kit this month!

This kit just keeps going! I have made two more layouts to share. That's #6 and 7! I still have lots left for one or 2 more layouts too.

Here is one of them:

and a close up of the letters:

I painted the Maya Road letters with a paint dauber, sprayed them with glimmer mist, and then applied glossy accents for the clear coat. I love how they look irl!

This is the other layout:
Image
I used the 52 sketches (Julie's site) sketch from this week. Nicole used the same sketch on her Easter layout.

This is my college roommate and I back in 1997. It was really fun to scrap this old picture! (hi Ang!!!)

Here is a close up of these letters. I stickled them with 3 dots. I was inspired by Julie's layouts with the dots on her titles.

Thanks for looking!

ps-I will be posting a layout class on the Sd4u site next weekend. I'll share it here too!

We only have 2 more challenges for our scrappy party at SD4U. Let me show you what we have been making so far:

Here are the challenges as they will be posted:

JEN 3/1
1. Our first month of business was March. Easter was in March of last year, so your challenge representing this month is to create any size layout with these elements:

something brown to represent a chocolate bunny
something new in your stash to represent the newness of spring
The word CHICK in you title

Image

HEATHER 3/3
2. Our 2nd month was April. You know how the saying goes, "April showers bring. . ."

Use 4 blue elements on your layout (can be bling, brads, flowers, ink, paint, paper, etc) to represent the rain showers in April. This does not have to be monchoromatic.

Image

ANGEL 3/5
3. Our 3rd month is May and we know May is known for May flowers, but its also Mother's Day.

Create a card or altered project for Mother's Day with at least 5 flowers on it.

Image

HEATHER 3/7
4. June was our 4th month. You have two choices for this challenge. Either create a Father's Day card or a layout with an orange and blue color scheme. Those colors seem so summery and that's what June leads up to!

Image

NICOLE3/9
5. July was the 5th month of business and that month brings picnics, BBQs, and Independence Day.

Create a birthday card or party favor with a red, white, and blue theme.

Image
Image

METTE3/11
6. Our 6th month anniversary was August. That to me is the quintessential summer month.

Your challenge for this month is to create a layout with:
circles (to represent beach balls)
stripes (for the beach towel)
something transparent (to represent the cool water of the pool, ocean, and lake)

Image

ANGEL 3/13
7. Month 7 was September, back to school for the kids. Time to celebrate the return of a schedule!

Create a layout with lots of bling on it
Journal about your daily routine. Routines can be boring so use the bling to spice up your routine!

Image

JULIE 3/15
8. October was the 8th month of kits and it is a spooky month. It doesn't have to be all about Halloween though.

Use black, purple, and gold on a card or layout. Do not use Halloween pictures or products.
Use part of a song somewhere on your layout. This could be your title or journaling.

Image

JEN 3/17
9. November, month 9, is time to give thanks and gather as a family.

Create a layout using a photo with more than one person in it
Use orange and/or brown somewhere on your layout
Include something round, like buttons, a journaling spot, the polka dots on the alpha, the pumpkins in the picture, anything round goes for this

Image

JEN 3/19
10. Month 10 was December, my favorite month of the year.

Create a layout about 3 of your favorite things (can be people or objects).
Use ribbon or trim(like on Christmas presents)
Use something red and green as well. These do not have to be the main colors.
Adhere your items in at least 5 different ways. I used staples, brads, foam dots, liquid glue, tape runner, and a library clip on the flower.

We have our Jan and Feb challenges next. Have you been playing along? You have until the end of the month to get your layouts made!

Its a Scrappy Anniversary Party @ SD4U

Here is how its going down!

Every other day starting March 1st we are posting a challenge celebrating a month of SD4U being in business. When you complete each challenge (and upload and link it to its thread), you will get a participation point. Each point is one entry into the raffles. Potentially you could have your name entered 12 times for the grand prize if you complete all the challenges. The grand prize will be drawn on March 31st. All challenges need to be completed, loaded into the gallery, and linked back to the correct thread by 11:59pm PST March 30th (that's a Monday).

Through out the month there will also be games, prizes, and extras. Anything you participate in here will also get you a participation point. These also turn into raffle entries. They may be simple and they may be hard, but the more you play, the more chances you have to win!

Is everyone ready to get their scrap on???

Come on over to SD4U to play. You can click the link to the right to get to the site. I will keep track of entries over there so you can always check your participation points.

One last thing, there will also be other prizes awarded during the month. You never know when a raffle is going to occur. If you want in on the raffle you have to have participated in at least one scrappy challenge. So lets get busy!

Challenges 1 & 2 and extra credits 1 & 2 have already been posted!

Challenge 1

Our first month of business was in March 2008. Easter was in March last year, so your challenge representing our first month is to create any size layout with these elements:

•Something brown to represent a chocolate bunny
•Something new in your stash to represent the newness of spring
•The word CHICK in you title

Here is my example:

Challenge 2

Our 2nd month was April.

You know how the saying goes, "April showers bring. . ."

Use 4 blue elements on your layout (can be bling, brads, flowers, ink, paint, paper, etc) to represent the rain showers in April. This does not have to be monchoromatic.

And here is DT member Heather Bowser's example:

EC #1 is to upload a birthday avatar to your profile. EC 2 is to post a party blinkie to your siggy and blog. Easy enough tasks right? Come on over and play. You could win a big prize!!!
